IAS officer Awanish Sharan has spoken out against study vlogs that claim UPSC aspirants need to study for more than 18 hours a day. Sharan, a member of the 2009 IAS batch, stated that this information is ‘misleading’ and that students don’t need to study for such long hours to succeed in competitive exams. His post ignited a discussion among students and aspirants.
Preparing for competitive exams like the UPSC is undeniably daunting, given the vast syllabus and the need for exhaustive preparation. However, Sharan’s stance challenges the belief that success is based solely on marathon study sessions.
Sharan emphasised, “Itna bhi padhna nahi hota hai (You don’t have to read this much),” suggesting that quality of study matters more than quantity. “Misleading!!! Stay away from these blogs,” he wrote in the caption.
Both the screenshots attached with the post show the content creators mentioning how an intensive study routine of 18+ hours is necessary to crack UPSC exams.
Take a look at the post:
While some echoed his sentiments, others highlighted the individual differences in retention capability and learning styles. They argued that merit should not be measured solely by the number of study hours.
The debate reflects the ongoing discourse surrounding study habits and strategies for competitive exams. Sharan’s perspective sheds light on the need for a balanced approach to exam preparation, focusing on efficiency, comprehension, and effective time management rather than sheer duration.
