Peter Wright responds to Adrian Lewis 'cheat' comment after duo pulled apart by security

Peter Wright has said he’s ‘not bothered’ about being branded a cheat by fellow professional Adrian Lewis.

The two rivals played out a tight battle in Minehead on Saturday, with Wright prevailing 6-5, but their clash was then marred by an unsavoury exchange on stage afterwards.

Following a heated argument, Lewis was led away by security but the ill-feeling didn’t end there, with ‘Jackpot’ later taking to social media to vent his frustration.

His anger centred around Wright claiming there was a loose floorboard on stage during the game, and then according to Lewis, the Scotsman then proceeded to put him off after he [Lewis] had taken a 3-2 lead.

“I honestly did nothing wrong,” tweeted Lewis.

“Even I was bewildered with what was going on and trying to process it whilst trying to concentrate on my darts. So at the end of the game I wanted to find out what was his problem because I didn’t have a clue what was going on.

“He said to me there was a loose floorboard and I found it! So my response to him was: ‘You took me out my rhythm, you had a game plan, and as world number two, it’s disgraceful and you’re nothing but a cheat’.”

Lewis repeated the slur in a further tweet, and said when losing Wright made him feel uncomfortable by “muttering things and shaking his head”.

However ‘Snakebite’, who was booed of stage, retained his focus to later beat Damon Heta 10-8, and in his post-match interview, was dismissive of Lewis’ comments.

“I’m not bothered about Adrian and the comments,” the 2020 world champion told Online Darts TV .

“People if they want to put stupid messages on there, put stupid messages. It doesn’t bother me because I don’t go on it, I just go on to play my game and plod on.”

As for his hostile reception from the crowd, Wright also appeared unruffled.

“I expected it. I’ve been booed plenty of times, I’ve been to Rotterdam with 10,000 people booing me when I’m going for a double so I can deal with it. It’s just a part of darts,” he added.

Wright’s two wins set up a quarter final clash with Michael van Gerwen, who beat fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld 6-3 in round two before seeing off Gary Anderson 10-6.
