Behind his brooding looks and thick skin, local rapper Johniepee is channelling the devastating events that shook his world into his music.
The Dress Circle, which drops on Friday, November 19, is the fifth project and second album from the Balga-raised creative — who has shared the stage with hip-hop powerhouse Bliss n Eso on their sold-out shows — and is dedicated to two very special women “up in the dress circle” and feature on the album’s artwork.
His beloved nan passed away from cancer earlier this year after a “good innings” and his aunty was the victim of murder in 2019.
“I’m a very open book,” Johniepee, whose real name is John Pownall, told AAA.
“I’m not afraid to just be zero to 100 and talk about anything that’s going on in my life.
“I guess I’m not worried about how I’m perceived. I’m just like, this is me, this is what’s made me who I am. So here.”
Both women ignited his passion for music at a young age which has served as the medicine he needed to navigate everything life has thrown at him.
“(The album), it’s a lot of my own story, but stuff that if anyone’s lost a loved one, they’ll just relate (to)“, he said.
“It’s meant to paint the picture of a day in my head.
“Dawn ended up as the first track and it explains what’s going on in the last year or so.”
With the new year in sight, he’s planning an album launch party and to head on tour with his latest tracks.
“I’d rather not just tour WA I’d rather get back over the east coast,” he said.Internet Explorer Channel Network
