remand extended for former aide to ex-minister, businessman in macc probe

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said the two men were alleged to have received bribes from companies that were awarded contracts worth millions of ringgit.

PETALING JAYA: A magistrate has granted the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) an extension to the remand order for a former political secretary to a former minister and a businessman under investigation over bribery allegations.

The duo are suspected of soliciting and accepting bribes from several companies and contractors who were awarded contracts from a ministry, the anti-graft agency said in a statement.

The MACC added that the three-day extension was issued by magistrate Ain Nurshahira Sahzan at the Putrajaya magistrates’ court earlier today.

Previously, the suspects, both in their 40s, were remanded for four days to assist in the investigation into the case. This remand order expired yesterday.

MACC said the suspects were alleged to have received bribes from companies that were awarded contracts worth millions of ringgit from a ministry between 2020 and 2021.

MACC was previously reported to have said that it had seized several luxury vehicles including a Rolls Royce, a customised Mercedes-Benz, a Porsche, and other cars as part of its investigation.

The MACC said it believed that these vehicles were purchased with the proceeds of corruption.

Meanwhile, MACC’s senior director (special operations) Azmi Kamaruzaman confirmed the further remand of the two suspects and that the case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009, for accepting gratification.
