I will never stop: Ian Bishop responds to Pakistan journalist who questioned West Indies great appreciating youngsters
West Indies legendary player Ian Bishop gave a befitting response to a Pakistan journalist who questioned him for appreciating young cricketers while commentating.
Bishop cleared that he would never stop acknowledging the emerging new talents. He reasoned that getting recognition inspires youngsters to believe in themselves, citing his own example. Touted as one of the greatest cricket commentators of cricket, Bishop has been part of some iconic moments and wins behind the microphone.
Bishop was on commentating duties during the thrilling semi-final clash of the ICC U19 Men’s cricket World Cup clash between Australia and Pakistan. Bishop heaped praise on young Pakistan pacer Ali Raza as the 15-year-old pacer managed to trouble the Australian batters, picking up 4 wickets in his fiery spell.
The teen bowler almost took his team to play the final against India on February 11. After being bundled out for 179 against Australia, the young sensation of Pakistan, Raza, pulled the team back into the game. As Raza was bowling a breathtaking spell and extracting the pace and bounce on offer to unsettle the batters, Bishop called him a ‘superstar.’ However, Pakistan lost the match by 1 wicket as Australia etched a win on the very last ball of the match.

Bishop’s appreciation for Raza didn’t go down well with a Pakistan journalist who asked the legendary cricketer not to overhype the young players. He also pointed out Bishop’s ‘remember the name’ commentary during the ICC T20 World Cup final between England and West Indies. Karlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes to chase down 19 runs in the last over, leaving the England team stunned.
“I was an ambitionless, drifting teenager when I first played senior cricket with Phil Simmons, against Marshall, Garner & later, Holding. I heard they’d said nice things about my game. That inspired me to believe in myself. I’ll never stop passing that on to others,” Bishop wrote on ‘X’.
Bishop has been the voice behind some memorable moments witnessed on the cricketing field. He has been a great observer of the game and has always appreciated the talented players. As a commentator, he does his homework and that is reflected in the details that he shares about players while commentating.
