A non-linear TV show coming to Netflix has left people scratching their heads over the concept, while drawing inevitable comparisons to a certain Black Mirror interactive film that came out several years ago.

On New Year’s Day, a new series is set to launch on the streaming platform called Kaleidoscope, starring Giancarlo Esposito, Rufus Sewell and Tati Gabrielle in the cast.

While at first glance, it may sound like your standard explosive heist drama, it turns out it’s anything, as Netflix has revealed viewers will be able to watch the entire story play out in whatever order they choose.

The story spans over the course of a 25-year period, following a group of master thieves as they attempt to break into a near-unattainable vault, in a tale loosely inspired by a true story when $70billion (£57bn) was stolen from Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy.

Each of the eight episodes – which span from 24 years before the heist to six months after it takes place – are named after colours, with Netflix claiming subscribers can have a ‘different immersive viewing experience’.

‘All viewers will eventually see all episodes, but the order in which they watch the episodes will affect their viewpoint on the story, the characters, and the questions and answers at the heart of the heist,’ the company states.

While some people have admitted they’re intrigued by the concept, others have expressed confusion over the layout, stating that they’ll simply end up watching it in whatever order it is put on Netflix.

‘That’s crazy cause how do you get a coherent story out of a random order of episodes?! Definitely sparking my interest tho,’ one person tweeted.

‘Me getting excited for a an awesome concept before realising how bad my anxiety will be over whether or not I picked the best order to watch,’ another said.

Several people made unavoidable comparisons to Bandersnatch, the interactive Black Mirror film that came out in 2018, which allowed viewers to choose the direction of the story.

‘God not this again, still recovering from Bandersnatch,’ one person stated, while another wrote: ‘After “Bandersnatch,” I’m willing to give this a try.’

Some Twitter users suggested that Netflix should put a ‘shuffle button’ on Kaleidoscope, giving viewers greater ease at watching the episodes in an unexpected order.

Meanwhile, there’s great excitement to see Better Call Saul and The Mandalorian star Giancarlo in the tale, with one person remarking: ‘Eight episodes in any order. Whaat,’ before adding: ‘Giancarlo never disappoints, ready ready.’

Kaleidoscope premieres on January 1 on Netflix.
