Pelosi: China no impedirá visitas de cargos de EEUU a Taiwán

China no aislará a Taiwán impidiendo que los funcionarios estadounidenses viajen a la isla, dijo la presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos, Nancy Pelosi, el viernes en Tokio, la última parada de una gira asiática marcada por una visita a la isla que enfureció a China.

Beijing ha tratado de aislar a Taiwán, indicó Pelosi, incluso recientemente, al impedir que la isla autónoma entre en la Organización Mundial de la Salud.

“Pueden tratar de impedir que Taiwán visite o participe en otros lugares, pero no aislarán a Taiwán impidiendo que viajemos allí”, manifestó defendiendo una visita que, según algunos, ha elevado la tensión en la región.

Pelosi calificó esa afirmación de “ridícula” y apuntó que su viaje a la isla no pretendía alterar el statu quo, sino mantener la paz en el estrecho de Taiwán. Además, elogió la peleada democracia taiwanesa, así como sus avances en diversidad y su éxito tecnológico y empresarial, y criticó las violaciones chinas de los acuerdos comerciales, de proliferación de armas y los problemas de derechos humanos.

“Si no hablamos de los derechos humanos en China por intereses comerciales, perdemos toda la autoridad moral para hablar sobre derechos humanos en cualquier otro lugar en el mundo”, afirmó. “China tienen algunas contradicciones: algunos avances en cuanto a la mejora de su población y algunas cosas horribles en cuanto a los uigures. De hecho, se ha calificado de genocidio”.

Pelosi apuntó que “los dos grandes países” — Estados Unidos y China – deben comunicarse en áreas como el clima y otras cuestiones globales. “No se trata de que nuestra visita determine cuál es la relación entre Estados Unidos y China. Es un desafío mucho más grande y a largo plazo y, una vez más, tenemos que reconocer que tenemos que trabajar juntos en ciertas áreas”.

“Nuestra amistad con Taiwán es sólida. Es bipartidista en la Cámara y en el Senado, con un apoyo abrumador a la paz y al statu quo en Taiwán”, añadió.

Pelosi, que es la primera presidenta de la Cámara que visita Taiwán en 25 años, afirmó el miércoles en Taipéi que el compromiso de Washington con la democracia en la isla y en otras partes del mundo “sigue siendo férreo”.

La alta funcionaria y otros cinco miembros del Congreso llegaron a Tokio el jueves en la noche tras visitar Singapur, Malasia, Taiwán y Corea del Sur.

    China, que sostiene que Taiwán forma parte de su territorio y amenaza con anexionarlo por la fuerza si fuese necesario, calificó su viaje de provocación y el jueves inició unas maniobras militares, que incluyeron prácticas con misiles, en seis zonas en torno a la isla, que podrían ser las mayores desde mediados de la década de 1990.

    Pelosi señaló que China había lanzado los “ataques utilizando probablemente nuestra visita como excusa”.

    Antes el viernes, el primer ministro de Japón, Fumio Kishida, dijo que los ejercicios militares chinos en las inmediaciones de Taiwán representan un “grave problema” que amenaza la paz y la seguridad de la región, luego del lanzamiento de cinco misiles balísticos durante el operativo que cayeron en la zona económica exclusiva japonesa.

    Kishida, que habló tras su desayuno con Pelosi y la delegación estadounidense, dijo que hay que “frenar de inmediato” el lanzamiento de misiles.

    Por su parte, el ministro japonés de Defensa, Nobuo Kishi, dijo que cinco proyectiles cayeron el jueves en la zona económica exclusiva cerca de Hateruma, una isla en el extremo sur del país. Además, indicó que Tokio protestó ante Beijing alegando que los misiles son “amenazas graves a la seguridad nacional de Japón y a la seguridad del pueblo japonés, y los condenamos enérgicamente”.

    El Ministerio de Defensa nipón apuntó más tarde que cree que otros cuatro miles, disparados desde la costa de Fujian, en el sureste de China, sobrevolaron Taiwán.

    En los últimos años, Japón ha reforzado su capacidad de defensa y la presencia de soldados en el suroeste del país y en islas remotas como Okinawa, que está a unos 700 kilómetros (420 millas) al noreste de Taiwán. Muchos residentes han expresado su preocupación porque la isla se vea involucrada rápidamente en cualquier asunto relacionado con Taiwán. Okinawa alberga a la mayoría de los cerca de 50.000 soldados estadounidenses apostados en Japón dentro de un pacto bilateral de seguridad.

    Durante el desayuno, Pelosi y la delegación legislativa abordaron también su preocupación compartida de seguridad sobre China, Corea del Norte y Rusia, y se comprometieron a trabajar por la paz y al estabilidad en Taiwán, dijo Kishida. La mandataria estadounidense se reunió también con su homólogo nipón, Hiroyuki Hosoda.

    Está previsto que los ejercicios chinas, en las que participan la Armada y la Fuerza Aérea, entre otros departamentos, terminen el domingo. Incluyen ataques con misiles a objetivos en las aguas al norte y al sur de la isla, lo que recuerda a las últimas grandes maniobras con las que Beijing buscó intimidar a los líderes y votantes en Taiwán en 1995 y 1996.

    Taiwán ha puesto a su ejército en alerta y realizó simulacros de defensa civil, mientras que Estados Unidos tiene numerosos activos navales en la zona.

    Beijing también voló aviones de guerra hacia Taiwán y bloqueó las importaciones de cítricos y pescado.

    China y Taiwán, que se dividieron en 1949 tras una guerra civil, no mantienen oficialmente una relación diplomática, pero les unen vínculos comerciales por miles de millones de dólares.
