Pedestrian, truck driver killed in crashes on Port Road and South Eastern Freeway

Two fatal road crashes in Adelaide yesterday remain under investigation, including one that claimed the life of an elderly pedestrian who died in hospital last night.

The 90-year-old man was struck at West Croydon, on Port Road near Minnie Street, by a Kia SUV on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 2:30pm.

The man was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with life-threatening injuries “but sadly died last night”, police said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV, a 48-year-old from Croydon, was not injured.

The victim was the 71st person killed on South Australia’s roads in 2021, seven more than at the same time last year.

His death came just hours after a 77-year-old Bridgewater man died at the scene of a crash between two trucks on the South Eastern Freeway.

That crash, at Leawood Gardens about 1:45pm, caused the closure of the freeway’s up-track as well as major delays on Portrush, Glen Osmond and Cross roads, with queues stretching several kilometres.

The victim was driving a Hino truck when it collided with an Isuzu driven by a 38-year-old Adelaide Hills man, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police are asking for anyone with further information or dashcam footage of either incident to contact Crime Stoppers, on 1800 333 000.
