The Black Friday bargain fest, which has come over from the United States, has proven to be “unprecedented in popularity” online. Payments company Klarna saw an increase in purchases in the Netherlands by almost a quarter compared to last year. The peak was around 9 p.m. when sales were nearly five times higher than on an average Friday night.

According to Klarna, the Dutch have been interested in the offers from the first minute of Black Friday. In the first hour, the Swedish-based company noticed a 780 percent increase in sales compared to a normal day. The week before Black Friday was also extra busy.

Several retail companies have spread the bargain festival over several days, also to prevent crowds in the shopping streets due to the corona virus, for example. Retail trade organizations such as RND and INretail also insisted on this in advance. Many consumers opted for the ‘safe’ online offers. Online sales rose 48 percent in the week before Black Friday. The Dutch mainly bought electronics, jewelry and accessories and goods and the sports & hobby category.

More than 1000 Dutch people took part in Klarna’s research. In addition, the Swedes also surveyed thousands of consumers in other countries. Klarna works with more than 38,000 web shops in the Netherlands.

Furthermore, data from credit card ICS shows that in the past week the Dutch mainly shopped at foreign webshops. Two thirds of the online spending in the week of Black Friday was made at a foreign webshop. Online spending with a credit card rose by 10 percent.

According to ICS, many Dutch people do not realize when placing an order that it is often a foreign webshop. This is mainly due to the Dutch-language webshop where the items are purchased.

ICS points out that, especially in countries outside the European Union, the rules for product safety and warranty conditions of web shops are less well anchored in legislation and that consumers are not always properly insured against damage or theft. For example, almost a third of online shoppers have lost a package after placing an order and one in five Dutch online shoppers has had to deal with a rogue webshop.
