Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill React to Travis Kelce's Record-Breaking Contract with Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are making moves to ensure they could be the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowl championships in a row. The first of those moves was to extend head coach Andy Reid to a new five-year, $100 million deal that makes him the highest-paid coach in the league.
The Chiefs also extended president Mark Donovan and general manager Brett Veach, keeping the core of the front office together to also keep together its core in the front office. During the 2024 NFL Draft, the team moved up in a trade with the Bills to select the combine’s fastest receiver, Xavier Worthy. Worthy’s 4.21 40-yard dash is now an NFL Combine record.
Keeping together a championship team makes total sense, and this is why the Chiefs have won three Super Bowl rings in the last five seasons. To add to their incredibly smart moves, the team also announced that perennial tight end Travis Kelce was getting an extension, making him the highest-paid player at his position.
NFL analyst Tom Pelissero broke down the contract, stating, “Clarification on Travis Kelce’s contract: It’s a new two-year, $34.25 million deal, replacing the two years and $30.25M he had left on his old deal. So he’s under contract through 2025, not 2027. Apologies for the miscommunication.”
The new $17.125 million per year deal makes him the highest-paid tight end in history, eclipsing Raider tight end Darren Waller, who was making $17 million annually.
Kelce is Mahomes’ favorite go-to weapon. Though his regular season numbers were a bit down compared to 2022, he showed up in the playoffs. Showing up when it matters most is what counts, and Kelce was rewarded for his efforts to always be dependable.
Naturally, he got congratulated by Mahomes — and by a surprising former teammate.
Mahomes posted on X, stating simply, “I told y’all I’ll never let him leave!! Congrats my guy! @tkelce.”
Mahomes knows how important it is to have Kelce catching his passes, as does the Chiefs organization. We imagine Mahomes had some sort of meeting with Reid and the front office to ensure they were going to bring back Kelce.
Despite not being on the Chiefs any longer, former favorite Mahomes pass catcher Tyreek Hill also shouted out Kelce for his new contract.
Hill wrote a post on X simply stating, “The greatest.” Kelce is certainly the greatest tight end playing currently and is already being mentioned among past greats like Tony Gonzalez, Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, and Antonio Gates.
Kelce currently has 77 career touchdowns, good for fifth-best for the tight end position in NFL history. He is closing the gap on fourth-place Graham, who has 89.
Kelce’s 11,328 receiving yards are fourth-best. He is set to pass Gates, who is in third place all-time with 11,841. Kelce could easily surpass Gates in the 2024 season.
Kelce might break multiple records for the tight end position by the time he calls it a career, and he now has two more years to prove that he is the greatest tight end in the history of the NFL.
