Parsons changes base Leeuwinnen in ten places: ‘You don’t see anything like that in modern football’ Dutch football

The Orange squad will play an exhibition game against Japan in The Hague tomorrow, just 48 hours after their difficult draw in the Czech Republic. National coach Mark Parsons sees plenty of opportunities and changes his team in no fewer than ten places.

Parsons is unhappy about the situation. “You don’t see that in modern football, two matches so close to each other,” he says. “It is an unfortunate situation and a challenge. We are going to use new players, who normally hardly make minutes. It is not realistic to starting with the same players now, but I hope they can come in. On the other hand, it is also an opportunity to make something positive out of it.”

For Shanice van de Sanden it is certainly something positive, it is most likely in the base. “You can only be proud of playing for your country,” she laughs. “So yes, if I can start, I’ll be there. I’m really looking forward to it. But there is still a meeting, so it is not yet certain.”

Van de Sanden is mainly a substitute for both the Orange and her club Wolfsburg. ,,I now know what my role is like, and I’ll make sure I’m ready for it. Also against the Czech Republic, when me and Kika van Es came in, we brought a certain energy to the team. And I think we need that. I do everything I can to get a basic spot here and there, that sometimes works at Wolfsburg.”

,,It is especially nice to start again in the base, I certainly enjoy that”, continues the attacker. ,,And tomorrow we can measure ourselves again with Japan, that is a different story than the Czech Republic. If I have to be honest I expect a lot from Japan.”

In the World Cup qualifying match against the Czech Republic, there was barely a draw. ,,The Czechs fought for everything, they turned it into war,” says Parsons. ,,In the first half we played well, but in the second half it deteriorated. We dropped big holes and the Czechs were sharp in the transition There is also still a lot of work to be done with the standard situations.”

Van der Sanden, who came on in the game, also saw plenty of room for improvement. ,,We have shown character, but we are the better team, so we should win,” she explains. ,,We created three hundred percent chances in the first 20 minutes, and they just have to go in. another country with even more qualities, then it can be very difficult, but the confidence is not just gone, it is still there.”

The Orange Lionesses may soon be able to count on reinforcements. Due to her triple nationality, 22-year-old Damaris Egurrola of Olympique Lyon can play for Spain, Switzerland or the Netherlands. ,,She is a fantastic player”, says Parsons. ,,Of course it would be nice, but that choice is hers. My focus is now on the selection that is now available.

Dominique Janssen, Vivianne Miedema and Jill Roord can skip the friendly against Japan tomorrow. The Netherlands already missed four permanent players against the Czech Republic with Aniek Nouwen, Sisca Folkertsma, Jackie Groenen and Lieke Martens. National coach Mark Parsons has added Eva van Deursen (Arizona State), Samantha van Diemen (Feyenoord), Lisa Doorn (Ajax), Fenna Kalma (FC Twente), Romée Leuchter (Ajax) and Nadine Noordam (Ajax) to his selection. Noordam was already on standby.
