Parashurama Jayanti is celebrated to honor the birth of Lord Parashurama, who is revered as the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu which holds great religious significance in Hindu tradition. It falls on the Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha (bright lunar fortnight) in the month of Vaishakha. This year it will be celebrated on Friday May 10, 2024. The Tritiya Tithi of Vaishakha begin at 04:17AM, May 10 and will end at 02:50AM, May 11.
Parashurama was born as the son of Jamadagni Rishi and Renuka Devi. His father, Jamadagni was a sage and a descendant of Bhrigu Maharishi. Parashurama was known for his intense devotion to his father and his unwavering commitment to Dharma.
His incarnation had a specific purpose which was to eliminate irreligious, sinful, and ruthless kings and to reduce the burden of the earth. Parshurama’s actions were not driven by personal vengeance but by a sense of duty. His story teaches us about the importance of standing against injustice and protecting Dharma. Despite his warrior nature, Parashurama was also a great sage and educator. He imparted knowledge of martial arts and weaponry skills upon his disciplines.
Lord Parashurama is known for having destroyed the Kshatriyas 21 times from the Earth. Interestingly, Lord Parashurama was a Brahmin with qualities of a Kshatriya. The story begins with the tragic incident involving parashurama’s father. Jamadagni possesed a divine cow called Kamadhenu, which could grant any wish. The kshatriya king Kartavirya Arjuna (Sahasrarjuna) coveted Kamadhenu and forcefully took it from Jamadagni’s ashram. Enraged by thus act, Parashurama vowed to avenge his father’s humiliation. Parashurama took a solemn oath to rid the world of oppewssive Kshatriya rulers who abused their power and deviated from dharma. He pledges to use his mighty axe (Parashu) and eradicate 21 generations of Kshatriya.

Appearance and Attributes: Lord Kalki is often depicted as having lotus-petal-like eyes, a very dark complexion, and an effulgence as bright as the sun. Kalki Avatar is depicted as a warrior sage, wielding a divine weapon known as the sword of righteousness. He is often portrayed as riding a white horse named as Devadatta, symbolizing purity and strength.
Name and its meaning: The name Kalki likely originated from Sanskrit and word Kalka, means foulness or filth. Therefore, the meaning of the name Kalki is the destroyer of filth (darkness) or the remover of darkness.
Origin and mention in texts: Kalki Avatar is not explicitly mentioned in the Vedas. However, the epithet “Kalmallkinam,” meaning “Brilliant Remover Of Darkness,” is found in Vedic literature for Rudra (later known as Shiva), which has been interpreted as a “forerunner of Kalki.” Kalki Avatar is also described in various Hindu Texts, including the Mahabharata, Vishnu Purana, Matsya Purana, Bhavishya Purana, Kalki Purana, and Bhagavata Purana.
Birth and Family: According to Kalki Purana, Lord Kalki would be born in a village named as Shambhala. He would be born into a Brahmin Family as the son of Vishnuyasa and Sumati. His birth would occur in the month of Vaishakha on the twelfth day during the fortnight of the waxing moon.
Siblings and Wives: Lord Kalki would have three elder brothers: Kavi, Prajan, and Sumantra, who would be heroic warriors. His two wives would be Padmavati (incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi) and Ramaa.
Mission:
The primary aim of Kalki’s life would be to defeat evil and establish satya yuga (the age of truth and righteousness). He would set out to conquer the entire world, defeating many sinful kings who represent the forces of darkness (kali yuga).
