State weather bureau PAGASA said on Wednesday that one to two tropical cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility in May.

In its 4 a.m. weather forecast, PAGASA weather specialist Rhea Torres said there could be two scenarios.

“Sa unang scenario po ay posible po itong lumapit ng ating kapuluan bago ito mag-recurve papalayo ng ating bansa,” she said.

(In the first scenario, it may approach our archipelago before it moves away from our country.)

In the second scenario, Torres said the tropical cyclone may cross the Eastern Visayas, Bicol, Mimaropa, and some parts of Luzon.

“Yung second scenario naman kung mas mababa po yung entry point ng bagyo or mabuo po ito sa may eastern section ng Mindanao posible po itong tahakin ang bahagi po ng Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, at ilang bahagi ng Calabarzon bago po ito lalabas sa may WPS at magre-recurve po ulit palayo ng ating kapuluan,” she said.

(The second scenario is if the typhoon’s entry point is lower or it forms in the eastern section of Mindanao, it is possible that it will reach parts of Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, and some parts of Calabarzon before it exits the West Philippine Sea and will move away from our archipelago.)

Many areas in the country have been experiencing “extreme danger” and “danger” levels of heat index.

The highest heat index in the country since last year was recorded on Sunday in Iba, Zambales at 53°C, according to PAGASA.

PAGASA on March 22 declared the start of the warm and dry season in the country and the start of the El Niño phenomenon on July 4 last year.

Since 2023, the United Nations has warned the public of “global boiling.”

“The era of global warming has ended, the era of global boiling has arrived,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in June 2023. —Joviland Rita/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
