Oxford Üniversitesi, yapay zekânın uzun vadede insanlığın yerini alma tehdidiyle ilgili yazılarıyla bilinen ve en iyi küresel düşünürler listelerine giren İsveç doğumlu bir filozof olan Nick Bostrom tarafından yönetilen 19 yıllık İnsanlığın Geleceğin Enstitüsü’nü (Future of Humanity) kapattı.

SpaceX’in sahibi milyarder Elon Musk, 2015 yılında yapay zekâ tehdidini araştırmak üzere kardeş bir kuruluş aracılığıyla enstitüye 1 milyon sterlin bağışlamıştı.

Bostrom, Guardian’a yaptığı açıklamada, enstitünün kapatılmasının ardından Oxford’daki görevinden istifa ettiğini söyledi. Bostrom, “siyahların beyazlardan daha aptal olduğunu” iddia ettiği ve ırkçı bir kelime kullandığı onlarca yıllık bir e-postanın ortaya çıkmasının ardından geçen yıl bir özür yayımlamıştı.

İnsanlığın Musk’ın sık sık tekrarladığı bir simülasyonda yaşıyor olabileceği teorisini popüler hale getiren Bostrom, bu hafta web sitesinde yayınlanan uzun bir nihai raporda enstitünün kapatılması hakkında konuştu. Merkezin çalışmalarını överken, Oxford ve felsefe bölümünden gelen “idari engellerle” karşı karşıya kaldığını da söyledi.

Future of Humanity’nin internet sitesinde yer alan bir açıklamada, Oxford’un 2020’de bağış toplama ve işe alımları dondurduğu ve 2023’ün sonlarında felsefe fakültesinin enstitüde kalan personelin sözleşmelerini yenilememe kararı aldığı iddia edildi.
