Outlook for June 2024 SASSA grant payments

Isn’t it crazy to think that June 2024 SASSA grant payments will be the first after the 29 May General Elections? As we all know, the South African Social Security Agency increased grants by 4.8% back in April. Likewise, the department is tightening its belt to eliminate irregular payments that are costing it millions each month.

To eradicate fraud and corruption, it has just introduced facial recognition in the SASSA referral process. As per its stricter asset- and means-test policing, this is to catch those fraudulently claiming others’ monthly R370 SRDs. Now you’ll no longer be able to hide in the shadows, says the agency.

With just Social Relief of Distress grants to go between 25 and 30 May 2024, our attention then moves to June 2024 SASSA grant payments. With roughly 4-million Older Persons, 13-million Childcare (across three grants) and 1-million Disability and War Veterans, social welfare payments account for 3.6% of the country’s GDP.

Even accounting for that fact, South Africa’s social grants are nowhere near enough to make ends meet for those who need them to survive. Consumer inflation for the year sits at roughly 6.2% and Eskom has hiked electricity by 12.8%. As a result, grant recipients are steadily getting poorer and worse equipped to survive in this cost-of-living crisis Mzansi finds itself in. That’s why a large majority of SASSA Child Support grant beneficiaries engage in informal work to support themselves.
