Osaka skips postponed Indian Wells tournament

Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Indian Wells tournament, which will be held in California early next month. The Japanese had her breakthrough three years ago in Indian Wells, by winning her first title on the WTA Tour at the highly regarded American tournament. “We look forward to seeing you in 2022, Naomi,” the organization wrote on Twitter.

Osaka (23) had already announced a break at the beginning of this month after her elimination in the third round of the US Open. ,,I really don’t know when I’ll play my next game,” said the Japanese in New York in tears. “I think it’s best if I take a break. When I win a match, I’m not even happy. It feels more like a relief. And if I lose, I’m very sad. That is no longer normal.”

Osaka, the highest-earning sportswoman in the world, has been struggling with mental problems for some time. The four-time Grand Slam winner has only seen sporadic action in recent months after her much-discussed press boycott at Roland Garros. The Japanese former number 1 in the world has dropped to eighth place in the global ranking.

The Indian Wells tournament – for men and women – is normally always held at the beginning of March, but now takes place once in October due to the corona vicissitudes.
