One of those players seems to be veteran midfielder Thabang Monare. The evergreen star is fresh from earning a bronze medal at the 2023 Afcon with Bafana Bafana. A surprise selection for many, he was primarily used to see out games by Hugo Broos in the Ivory Coast. Having seen his exploits on the continent, Pirates are now believed to be ready to tie him down to a new deal.

Pirates set to complete Monare contract renewal

“Everything has been concluded in terms of a new contract for him (Monare). There has been talks with him since he came back from the AFCON. So far everything is sorted, he is happy to stay at the club (Pirates) and what is important is that the club also wants him to stay.

“Another important thing is that coach Jose and the rest of the technical team want him to stay on at the club. There won’t be any changes to his old deal, just a contract renewal. Some players when they are at a position that he is at they tend to be offered salary cuts, but he is lucky because he will continue earning the salary that he is earning.”  Said a source speaking to The Citizen.

This will represent an impressive turnaround for Monare, with Pirates reportedly releasing back in 2022. It appeared that the two parties failed to reach an agreement over fresh terms but a compromise must’ve been found eventually. Since that initial new deal, the 34-year-old has often found himself as a starter when fit.

The new deal at Pirates will take him to 35, it now remains how long Monare can keep going for.
