'I lumped the emeralds with the coal' Russell Crowe redeems himself after Irish tour gaffe

Not you too Russell! As we find ourselves knee deep in awards season, the annual round of explaining that the Ireland is not actually part of the UK has officially begun…

While typically the biggest offenders for mislabeling the Irish stars as British are foreign media outlets, now a Hollywood star has joined the ranks, and one of our favourites to boot!

Russell Crowe who regularly pops up on our shores made an awkward gaffe while announcing a series of forthcoming gigs but was thankfully very quick to set the record straight.

As well as being an Oscar-winning actor, the New Zealand star also has a strong passion for music and is part of a musical collective known as The Indoor Garden Party.

The group founded in 2009 outside Michael Parkinson’s pub and has been dubbed a ‘hive’ of musicians and songwriters coming together to create ‘unique material’ and in 2023 included a cameo from our own Janet Devlin.

Russell and his group are heading back this way on tour in the coming months but a mix up over the tour announcement ended up leaving him red faced.

Announcing the gigs on social media, Russell told fans that he was embarking on a ‘UK Tour’ but the destinations listed also included Dublin.

The actor was quick to notice the mistake writing: ‘Correction Ireland in July is Dublin, UK gigs in the same month, Warrington, London, Leeds, Inverness.’

In response to comments from fans querying the correction he followed up his message with another explainer.

‘Okay, to those who understand… Cannot believe I lumped the Emeralds with the coal ha! Forgive a bloke with too many balls in the air? We will be there on a Monday night, July 1.

‘No exorcisms this time, just tunes and pints and stories and I’ll know exactly where I am,’ he promised.

Irish fans almost unanimously left him of the hook for the misstep with one writing: ‘We forgive you this time.’

Another replied: ‘You’re back off the naughty step so Russell, see you in the bar very soon hopefully!’

‘Decent recovery, all is forgiven,’ chimed a third while another person fired back: ‘All is forgiven as long as you buy every Irish citizen a pint while you’re over here.’
