All India Rank movie review: Varun Grover directorial is a tedious math class which can be skipped

After winning hearts with his sharp writing, the standup comic-writer-lyricist Varun Grover made his directorial with a coming-of-age drama All India Rank. The concept, roughly can be described as the ambitions of parents, which should be fulfilled by their child. ‘Mera beta doctor, engineer banega, IIT mein jayega’. But very few parents ask their sons or daughters what they want to do in life.

Talking about the plot, it revolves around (Vivek) Bodhisattva Sharma, who has to leave his hometown, Lucknow and ailing mother and go to Kota to fulfil his father’s dream. Well, he is in no mood or interested in being in the race of IIT. But we see certain elements like financial stress, societal pressures and other things taking the front seat.

In campus, we see his life navigating through coaching classes, inner turmoil, friendship and first love. The adolescence stage is shown in the most believable. However, the problem lies with its ordinary direction and snail-paced narrative. Honestly, there is hardly and progression in the story. The movie reminds you of 12th Fail, Super 30, 3 Idiots and Kota Factory but unfortunately fails to deliver that kind of engaging content.

However, there are some positives about All India Rank, which is humour and Varun deserves credit for penning it most amazingly. Since the film is shown in the 90s era, the production design convincingly shows that phase and takes you down memory lane.

Talking about the plot, Bodhisattva Sharma as Vivek, Shashi Bhushan as father RK Singh and Geeta Agrawal Sharma as mother Manju Rani play their characters with utmost sincerity but fail to uplift the tepid film. Honestly, All India Rank fails to garner your attention despite having a runtime of just over 100 minutes.
