popularity, language

Statistic Norway (Statistik sentralbyrå, SSB) has released figures from a survey that have shown a decline in the use of Nynorsk in schools.

Bokmål dominates, drop in Nynorsk

A survey, conducted by the SSB, shows the declining popularity of Nynorsk as a language in Norwegian schools. Results show that 87.3% of students in primary and middle school use and study Bokmål. Nynorsk has seen its use and study drop in the past two decades from 14.8% in 2001 to only 11.6% in 2021. Some 878 students were taught in the Samí language whilst 6.293 students were taught in a language other than these 3.

There are no more counties left in the counties where a majority of students are taught in Nynorsk. The largest share is in Møre og Romsdal and Vestland counties with 49% and 48% respectively.

In 4 counties, Troms and Finnmark, Nordland, Trøndelag and Oslo there are no students being taught in Nynorsk. The use of language, in primary school, is determined by the location of the municipality.
