Joondalup Health Campus: Six sets of twins delivered within two weeks at Perth hospital

The stars aligned at Joondalup Health Campus recently when the special care nursery had the care of six sets of twins simultaneously.

The six sets of twins were born between October 26 and November 8.

A photo taken on November 10 captured the rare event, albeit missing a set of twins who were born on November 6 and discharged two days later.

The smallest of the twins weighed in at just 1.78kg and was also born the earliest of the group at 33 weeks.

Joondalup Health Campus’ special care nursery supports babies who need extra help to grow strong enough to go home with their families, including babies born between 32 and 36 weeks, which is considered premature.

Head of Neonatology Dr Ravisha Srinivasjois said the milestone closely aligned with World Prematurity Day on November 17.

Dr Srinivasjois said while all pregnant patients were supported to take their babies to full term, about one in 10 births worldwide were premature for a range of reasons.

“We are extremely proud of our special care nursery team who deliver incredible care to these precious little bubs and wrap around care to support their parents at such a stressful time,” Dr Srinivasjois said.

“Every little one is so very precious and our recent influx of twins into the nursery was quite unique.”

Jelena Tontick, who gave birth to twins Kalea and Keanu born at 36 weeks and six days, and husband Greg Ranga praised the unit.

“The nurses were absolutely great and I learned a lot. They explained everything to me — all the basics to help the babies grow,” she said.

Keanu needed breathing support before both twins were given the green light to go home after a week.

Last financial year more than 2800 babies were born at Joondalup Health Campus. 220 were premature and were cared for in the special care nursery, which has grown from eight to 16 cots over the past decade.

They can be treated for a range of issues, such as breathing difficulties, feeding problems, inability to maintain body temperature, digestive issues and maintaining oxygen levels in their blood.
