Omicron variant: 'Mumbai needs to take extreme precautions', says BMC Commissioner
Omicron variant: ‘Mumbai needs to take extreme precautions’, says BMC Commissioner

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday held a meeting with BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal and discussed the issue of the discovery of the new Corona variant in South Africa. The BMC declared that extreme precautions should be taken in the Mumbai metropolis.

BMC Commissioner Chahal directed authorities at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the administration of Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the police to take all necessary precautions at their respective levels.

The meeting was attended by all top officials of the corporation along with the Joint Commissioner of Police Law and Order. In the meeting, the various issues related to the newly discovered variant Omicron and the measures that need to be put in place for the same were discussed.

* If an international traveler arrives in Mumbai directly or by air from an African country where the new covid virus has been found, their passport should be strictly checked.

* A medical examination should also be done on the basis of whether the passengers are showing signs of infection or not. According to the current system, they should be given instructions for segregation.

* If a traveler is found to be infected, he or she should be subjected to immediate institutional segregation and verification of the genome sequencing of the infected specimens. Also, further action should be taken immediately after finding the citizens in the vicinity of the victims.

* All international travelers arriving in Mumbai should collect the necessary information of the last fortnight’s journey.

* Incoming international travelers are required to provide a self-declaration letter stating their travel information for the last fortnight.

(Note:- There are no direct flights to Mumbai from any of the African countries infected with the new virus, but precautionary measures will be undertaken)

* The Covid centers should be re-inspected to ensure that they are functioning properly.

* Medical manpower, stock of medicines, production and storage of medical oxygen, electrical system, fire fighting system at Covid centres should be reviewed.

* Emphasis on access to citizens who have received both doses of vaccines. Strict action against those who do not follow Covid-appropriate rules

* Strict action against employees working in various establishments, shops, malls and movie theaters if they have not been vaccinated.

* Just as the target for the first dose of Covid vaccine has been met in Mumbai, now the target for the second dose needs to be met urgently.

* All the divisional offices should review what measures need to be taken to start the ward war room at full capacity.

* Complete disinfection of public toilets in slums and similar areas at least five times a day.

* All private hospitals should also start preparing again for the treatment of covid.

Further, detailed instructions regarding testing, segregation etc. of international passengers arriving at the airport would be issued by the BMC once the Central and State Governments receive instructions, Chahal said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed on the new variant ‘Omicron’ and asked officials to review the plans to ease international travel restrictions.

As per an official release, the implications of the new variant for India and its impact on other countries were discussed. PM Modi spoke about the need to be proactive in light of the new variant.

The new variant has so far been detected in South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong.
