Oh baby: Winning weekend completed for Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt

Chris Bassitt and his wife had gave birth to their second child on Sunday.

The weekend couldn’t have gone any better for Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt, a win-win in the best ways possible for the veteran big league pitcher.

After an excellent outing to earn the victory for his team on Friday night in New York, Bassitt made quick exit for a late-late-night flight home, to be a witness to a big win of another kind, a treasured bundle that arrived on Sunday afternoon.

“Perfect weekend complete,” Bassitt tweeted at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday shortly after the Jays had finished off a three-game sweep of the New York Mets with a 6-4 win at Citi Field in Queen’s, N.Y. “Momma and Colson are doing great.”

Momma would be Bassitt’s wife Jessica, who delivered the couple’s second child on Sunday to cap a whirlwind weekend for the right hander, who signed a free-agent contract with the Jays in the off-season.

With his wife already in labour on Friday, Bassitt retained his steely competitive focus, striking out eight batters as he pitched 7.2 scoreless innings in the rain-delayed contest. Club officials had arranged for a flight home as soon as his work night was finished and Bassitt provided an update via Twitter on Saturday.

“Got back with plenty fo time,” Bassitt tweeted. “Still no baby. Our daughter was 50 hours of labour with a hurricane coming. Hopefully a baby and a W today.”

Young Colson Bassitt made the couple wait another day, but the Jays took care of the other winning assignment to extend their winning streak to four games.

On Saturday, the Jays placed Bassitt on the paternity leave but in all likelihood he will be activated in time for his next scheduled start against the Houston Astros on Wednesday at the Rogers Centre.
