The Most Expensive Car In The World In 2024
- Rolls-Royce’s coachbuilding program allows customers to commission one-of-a-kind vehicles, with the latest creation being the La Rose Noire, which took five years to make and is estimated to be worth $32 million.
- The La Rose Noire features a unique exterior design inspired by the Black Baccara rose, with a custom paint color that took over 150 iterations to perfect. The interior showcases intricate woodwork and a specially crafted watch by Audemars Piguet.
- While the La Rose Noire is the most expensive new car ever sold, it is not the most expensive car ever sold. The current record-holder is a Mercedes race car that was sold for $143 million. However, the La Rose Noire’s uniqueness and craftsmanship make it a valuable and significant piece of Rolls-Royce’s history.
In the world of high-end vehicles, Rolls-Royce sits at the very top of the luxury car market. If you want the most luxurious vehicle money can buy, then the Rolls-Royce Phantom represents the epitome of all luxury cars. Even with a starting price of $600,000, anyone with enough money could go out and buy one.
However, if you want something more exclusive, you could commission a bespoke coachbuilt vehicle. Rolls-Royce has reinstated its coachbuilding program to create special one-off vehicles for its customers. It all started with the one-off Rolls-Royce Sweptail in 2017 which was the most expensive new car at the time with a price tag of $13 million.
One of Rolls-Royce’s latest bespoke one-off creations for another customer is known as the La Rose Noire. No expense has been spared in the creation of this masterpiece which has taken five years to conceive. With that, Rolls-Royce has once again claimed the title of making the most expensive new car in the world with a price tag of an estimated $32 million, beating out the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail which carried a price tag of around $28 million.

The Epitome Of Rolls-Royce Coachbuilding
Coachbuilding was how Rolls-Royce cars were originally made before this process was discontinued in favor of the more efficient assembly line process. However, coach building returned with the creation of the one-off Sweptail, next was the Boat Tail and the newly introduced La Rose Noire. The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail is the first of four bespoke Droptail models planned for production. Each one will feature some of the most bespoke features and exclusive features and details that are unique to each car.
True Love And Mystery Accents
The making of La Rose Noire seems like a love story between the client and this stunning creation. It takes inspiration from the Black Baccara rose which is a dark velvet burgundy hybrid tea rose cultivated by French rose hybridizer, Jacques Mouchotte.
The dark exterior red color mimics the colors found on the Black Baccara. The rich red color of La Rose Noire is known as “True Love” while the darker tone is known as “Mystery”. These two tones were captured off the Black Bacarra which appears to change colors from bright red to a very dark tone when viewed from different angles.
To achieve the right shade needed for this vehicle, over 150 iterations were made before arriving at the final color. But this doesn’t hide the obvious Rolls-Royce design details that have been made to suit this new car.
The beautiful paint has also been applied as accent colors on other exterior surfaces of the vehicle. For instance, the signature Rolls-Royce Pantheon grille vanes have been hand-painted with True Love paint. This is only visible in certain lights along with the intricate lower grill. This piece is a 3D printed part with 202 hand-polished stainless steel ingots each hand-painted in True Love hue.

Exterior Features and Details Of The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail
Close
The Droptail series takes inspiration from classic Rolls-Royce Roadsters, Yachts, and additional cues from the world of horology. The overall shape is reminiscent of the Rolls-Royce Dawn, but this is a true roadster with two distinct characters. With the hardtop roof off, it takes the shape of an open-top roadster but with the roof on it looks like a coupe. This roof design is exclusive to La Rose Noire and won’t be repeated on other models.
Its 22-inch directional alloy wheels aren’t left untouched either as these are painted in a Dark Mystery finish. They also seem to have a mesmerizing shape similar to the flower the car takes inspiration from. The sloping rear deck is finished with Dark Mystery paint and an artwork piece that represents falling rose petals. This leads to a floating spoiler flank by two newly redesigned rear lights similar to those found on the New Rolls-Royce Spectre.

Exquisite Interior Details Of La Rose Noire
Close
The interior is the most complex part of this car as it has received the most attention to detail, with two years of development. The most stand-out feature is the abstract falling rose petals pattern that just looks like an artwork but it is more than that. It was formed using 1,603 pieces of individual black wood veneer triangles, 1,070 perfectly symmetrical elements from the background, and 533 asymmetrical red pieces to form the red petals. This pattern is found on the dashboard and behind the seats.
This is the most complex expression of parquetry ever created by Rolls-Royce. The owner specifically requested it to represent the natural and organic scattering of petals. The wood is sourced from black sycamore with French origin just like the Black Baccara which inspired the build of this car. Only one craftsperson was tasked with assembling the beautiful artwork and was only allowed to work in one-hour intervals and would not exceed five hours a day. It took a total of nine months to create this unique piece of art.
There are only two seats in La Rose Noire finished in light red True Love leather which is the primary interior color. It is also complimented with Dark Mystery leather accents with the interior metal parts finished in light copper accents, which is also found on the one-off timepiece.
Royal Oak Watch And A Special Wine Case
Every Rolls-Royce has a special analog clock which would cost a pretty penny but the La Rose Noire has a special watch. It is a one-off Royal Oak Concept split-second chronograph timepiece made by Audemars Piguet, that was specially hand-crafted for La Rose Noire and features Red and Dark Mystery colors inside its fascia.
The client wanted it to be mounted like a normal Rolls-Royce clock found on the dashboard, but should also be removable and with the ability to be worn like a normal watch. Royal Oaks of this nature would cost around $400,000 but it is safe to say this one-off creation would be among one of the most expensive AP watches in the world.
La Rose Noire is a special vehicle and to celebrate this creation, the owner requested a bespoke champagne chest to be made. A special Champagne de Lossy wine was also commissioned and is one of only a few made in the Chateau’s 160-year history. This wine is not available to the public and can only be purchased by a few individuals. It would be housed inside this specially crafted wine chest.
The Chest’s exterior features the True Love and Dark Mystery paint with the same sycamore wood artwork and stainless steel inserts. Inside, it features special champagne flutes and thermal coolers made from black anodized aluminum and carbon fiber which keeps the drink at optimum temperature. Every interior feature represents what Rolls-Royce coachbuilding is all about, who are willing to craft whatever it is that you desire, as long as you’re ready to pay for it.

The Real Story Behind The $13 Million Rolls-Royce Sweptail
Marking the return of Rolls-Royce’s iconic Coachbuild division, here’s everything you need to know about the $13 million Sweptail
La Rose Noire Is Not The Most Expensive Car Ever Sold
La Rose Noire may be the most expensive new car ever sold but it is far from the most expensive car ever sold. In recent years, Ferrari has been in the news for setting world record prices for their historic vehicles. But the pinnacle of Ferrari automobiles is the Ferrari 250 GTO which set a record sale price of $70 million in 2018. But this number is dwarfed by the most expensive car ever sold which is a Mercedes.
This car is only one of two race cars made by Mercedes-Benz in 1955 and was named after its chief engineer and designer Rudolf Uhlenhaut. It was based on the Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Grand Prix car which won two world championships. Both SLRs were owned by Mercedes and on May 5th, 2022, one was offered for sale at a private auction. Mercedes-Benz contacted RM Sotheby’s to handle the auction and only a few Mercedes-Benz collectors and VIP customers were invited.
The result was that the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, became the most expensive car ever sold with a price tag of $143 million. This beat the previous auction record by $95 million and private party sale record by $73 million. This is an enormous amount of money when compared with the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail.
But cars like these are not for driving, they are more like rolling art pieces expressed in the form of an automobile. Like any work of art with a good story, they ony appreciate in value. La Rose Noire is the only one of its kind and we might see it take the title of the most expensive car in the world if it ever goes up for sale in a few decades.
