Cody Bellinger’s deal with the Chicago Cubs could finally open the gates for some of agent Scott Boras’ other clients to finally sign contracts.
One — former Texas Rangers left-hander Jordan Montgomery — is drawing particular interest from an American League team.
But it’s not the Rangers.
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly focusing on trying to land Montgomery, with baseball insider Peter Gammons reporting that Boras and the Red Sox recently met and that talks have progressed.
MLB.com reports that the Red Sox’s main competition right now appears to be the Los Angeles Angels.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters in Fort Myers, Fla., that the club had a Zoom session with Montgomery before spring training began.
The resolution to the 2024 rights fee battle with Diamond Sports Group doesn’t appear to have moved the needle in luring Montgomery back for 2024.
Bellinger recently signed a three-year, $80 million deal with the Cubs. The deal is filled with options that could be triggered after 2024 that would allow Bellinger to explore free agency again. Montgomery could get a similar deal.
Other Boras clients, including Cy Young winner Blake Snell, third baseman Matt Chapman, and designated hitter J.D. Martinez, remain unsigned.
Montgomery is coming off his best overall season after going 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA with 166 strikeouts and 48 walks. With the Rangers, he went 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA.
He was 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA in the postseason for the Rangers, including the win out of the bullpen in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.
