NYY News: Judge tossed, Cole tossing
The Athletic ($) | Chris Kirschner: We saw something yesterday we’d never seen before: an Aaron Judge ejection. Perpetually one of the biggest victims of the human strike zone, Judge was called out on a ball off the plate by Ryan Blakney. While walking back to the dugout, the Yankee captain remarked that Blakney was “bull—-ing” the strike zone all day. Judge was booted for the first time in his entire baseball playing life, and while standing up for himself is something I’ve wanted him to do for years, only time will tell if there’s a marked change in how he gets calls.
New York Daily News | Peter Sblendorio: Gerrit Cole took a major step forward in his rehab on Saturday, throwing off a mound for the first time. The Yankee ace chucked 15 from 60’6”, will repeat that a couple more times this week, and then the club seems ready to plan out a rehab assignment. All told, the best pitcher in baseball should be back in the Bronx by June.
New York Post | Jon Heyman: If it weren’t for Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto would likely be a month into the most important contract year in recent baseball history. The 25-year-old has been everything the Yankees could have asked for so far in 2024, which only further underlines how expensive it will be to keep him in pinstripes going forward. Soto’s on the cusp of one of baseball’s biggest paydays, and the Yankees have to figure out a way to keep him in the family.
