Is church still safe for Christians in South Africa?

Crime affects all parts of society, and leaves no stone unturned or unaffected by its reach. Sometimes churches can become victims – and this has led to multiple robberies that target congregations from the country.

The national crime statistics apply to everyone, and churchgoers aren’t an exception to crimes.

Here’s more about crime, and how South Africa’s faithful can gather safely.

Is church still SAFE for Christians in South Africa?

Robberies and attacks are a daily reality, but not something that people imagine would affect their church or religious group.

The reality is that crime leaves nobody unaffected.

Criminals have been targeting South Africa’s faithful, including a church robbery that happened in October 2023. Robberies on holy ground put congregants at risk – and might mean that churches and their members need more precautionary measures.

Church and safety

Safety comes first.

If you’re going to services or meetings, travel with a group of people rather than by yourself. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) website, it’s safer when you travel in groups.

Churches should make sure they’re connected to nearby security companies, and able to reach the local police station in an emergency. Dress nicely for services, but don’t go to a service wearing all your valuable things.

Faith and safety are human rights, according to the Constitution.
