NYC garbage pick-up slowdown has Mayor de Blasio nipping at sanitation union

Asia's Tech News Daily

As droves of New York City municipal workers continue to resist a mandate to receive COVID vaccines, a slowdown in garbage pick-ups had Mayor de Blasio promising Wednesday that he’d press the matter with the sanitation workers union.

“There are some issues. We’re going to address those issues,” the mayor said at his morning news briefing. “We’re going to the union today to say this has to be addressed. This is something that we are not going to let continue.”

De Blasio was responding to a recent NY1 story that revealed garbage trucks in southern Brooklyn and Staten Island have been picking up far fewer tons of garbage since he announced his latest vaccine mandate last week.

Under the city’s new order, the deadline for almost all city workers to be vaccinated is this Friday. City employees who don’t get their shot by then will be placed on unpaid leave. Those who get it by Friday are entitled to a $500 bonus under the plan.

Included in the mandate are Sanitation Department employees, many of whom are represented by the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association.

Since Hizzoner unveiled the new order, residents of Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn have complained that their trash collectors have been coming in light when it comes to garbage pick-ups. Sanitation Department Commissioner Ed Grayson confirmed this fact to NY1, noting that some trucks are hauling in half their normal trash loads.

People march across the Brooklyn Bridge to protest the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for municipal workers on Oct. 25, 2021, in New York City. All city workers, excluding uniformed correction officers, are required to have at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by 5 p.m. on Oct. 29. Thousands of city employees, many donning Sanitation, EPA, NYPD and FDNY gear, march over the Brooklyn Bridge roadway Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, to protest Mayor de Blasio’s looming coronavirus vaccination mandate for all municipal workers in the city. The mandate, which takes effect Friday, Oct. 29, 2021, and covers 160,000 city employees, including cops and firefighters, constitutes medical tyranny, claimed the throngs of protesters as they marched across the bridge.

De Blasio wouldn’t opine on whether the dip in pick-ups amounted to a concerted work slowdown on the part of sanitation workers, but he clearly appears to view the current situation as unacceptable.

“New Yorkers need to know that their city’s going to be clean, and they have a right to that,” he said. “And they have a right to expect that their public employees will do their job for their fellow New Yorkers. We’re paying them to do a job. They have to do the job.”

Harry Nespoli, president of Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association, did not respond to messages.
