En man argumenterar med polis vid demonstrationerna i Tbilisi på söndagskvällen.

Minst 20 000 personer samlades i Georgiens huvudstad Tbilisi på söndagskvällen för att protestera mot den omstridda “agentlagen”.

Lagförslaget, som mötte protester även när det fick grönt ljus i en första parlamentsrunda i mitten av april, syftar till att kunna stämpla organisationer som “utländska agenter” om de får mer än 20 procent av sin finansiering från andra länder. En liknande lag i Ryssland används för att straffa regeringskritiker och tysta oberoende medier.

Under söndagens kilometerlånga marsch i huvudstaden syntes åtskilliga EU-flaggor. Enligt en AFP-journalist på plats ska en grupp demonstranter ha försökt ta sig igenom polisens avspärrning vid parlamentet för att en hissa den blå EU-flaggan med de tolv stjärnorna.

– Jag är här för att skydda Georgiens europeiska framtid. Nej till Ryssland, nej till den ryska lagen, ja till Europa, sade 19-årige Lasja Tjcheidze, som deltog vid marschen.

Lagförslaget, som inte klubbats formellt, har lagts fram av regeringspartiet Georgisk dröm, men har väckt ilska hos oppositionen och stora delar av befolkningen.

Regeringspartiet har de senaste åren vänt sig alltmer mot Moskva. Bedömare har upprepade gånger noterat Georgiens förhållandevis milda ton gentemot Rysslands krig i Ukraina. Många anser att det omstridda lagförslaget är oförenligt med den forna Sovjetstatens förhoppningar om ett framtida EU-medlemskap.

EU:s rådsordförande Charles Michel har konstaterat att lagen skulle “föra Georgien längre ifrån EU, inte närmare”.
