Path to trade up and draft a QB emerges for Falcons
The most important task of the offseason awaits the Falcons as Raheem Morris and Terry Fontenot lead the club into its next era.
The head coaching hire was critical, and the subsequent offensive coordinator hire was as well, but neither matter until Atlanta figures out the quarterback position.
A couple of months ago, it seemed like the Falcons would be able to choose from several different avenues. The options could quickly dwindle, though. Kirk Cousins and Baker Mayfield are the best free agents but could re-sign with their respective teams.
At one point, it looked plausible that the Falcons could trade up in the draft to find their franchise quarterback, but that no longer seems feasible… or does it? My expectation is the Bears, Commanders, and Patriots select quarterbacks, but a path to trade up with one of them has emerged.
“I’m hearing a bit of buzz about the third pick, which belongs to the New England Patriots,” Jeremy Fowler writes. “There are people around the league who believe they are open to trading the No. 3 selection, moving back in the draft and addressing the quarterback position in free agency. If the Pats do trade that pick … the two teams I’d keep an eye on are the Falcons (moving from the No. 8 spot) and the Vikings (moving from the No. 11 spot, assuming they don’t bring back Kirk Cousins).”
If New England does indeed trade out of the No. 3 pick, Atlanta should be on the phone immediately. More than likely, Jayden Daniels will be sitting there.
The Falcons would be absolute fools to let the Vikings or any other club outbid them for a possible franchise quarterback. The Patriots will be able to garner a significant trade package for the rights to draft whichever quarterback is available, so it won’t be cheap for the Falcons, but when you’re talking about a franchise guy, you should do whatever it takes.
