Google Maps will now show users turns and live ETA directly on lockscreen
Google introduced a slew of new features for Maps last year. One such feature was “Glanceable directions”, which, when enabled, displays important information to users directly on their lock screen, including real-time ETA and turn-by-turn directions. This feature was introduced in February. However, there has been no update on its availability until now. Reportedly, Google is slowly rolling out its new Glanceable directions for users.Â
According to Android Police, many users are now receiving this feature globally and across devices with version 11.116 for Android and 6.104.2 on iOS. The feature enables them to see real-time updates, display estimated arrival time (ETA), and the next turn directly on the lock screen or the route overview screen, improving the overall navigation experience.Â
Additionally, the new Maps feature also allows users to monitor their journey using the route overview, even if they haven’t initiated detailed directions by pressing the Start button. This feature proves useful for verifying the route in familiar areas. When activated, Maps automatically recalculates the route if the user veers off course while walking, driving, or biking, and adjusts the route preview accordingly. All in all, this new Google Maps feature enables users to stay informed about their route and directions without constantly unlocking their phone during the journey.Â
Notably, the glanceable feature on Google Maps is turned off by default. To enable the glanceable directions feature in Google Maps, follow these steps:
Â
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right corner.
- Select “Settings.”
- Scroll down to “Navigation settings.”
- Look for and toggle on “Glanceable directions while navigating.”
Meanwhile, Google Maps is undergoing an exciting AI-driven transformation, introducing several new features to offer users a more immersive experience. Here is what Google is releasing or has already introduced to Maps in the past few months:
Immersive View: This feature allows users to explore their routes in more detail, whether they’re driving, walking, or cycling. By selecting the desired directions and tapping the Immersive View preview, users get a multidimensional view with visual turn-by-turn directions. The time slider helps in planning departures based on simulated traffic and weather conditions. This feature is currently available for trips in cities like Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York, and Tokyo.
Lens in Maps: Formerly known as “Search with Live View,” Lens in Maps combines AI and augmented reality (AR) to provide context about your surroundings. Simply tapping the Lens icon in the search bar and lifting the phone reveals nearby ATMs, transit stations, restaurants, and more. Google is expanding this feature to over 50 new cities, including Austin, Las Vegas, and Rome.
Navigation Enhancements: Google Maps’ navigation is also updating to mirror the real world more accurately. With the immersive world view, users can expect enhanced colours, realistic building representations, and updated lane details to assist with complex driving manoeuvres.
Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: Google Maps will also show EV drivers real-time information about charging stations, including compatibility with their vehicle, charging speed (fast, medium, or slow), and the last usage timestamp.
