NSW premier promises change to bail laws
Well, changes will be introduced to Parliament next week to significantly tighten the state’s bail laws and the surveillance of people on AB OS. Let’s bring in our State politics editor Liz Daniels. Liz, the premier announces today it should be law by next week. It seems he’s listening to the public outcry. That’s right, Sophie. He’s foreshadowed major reforms that will be coming to State Parliament next week. This is part of a suite of measures that the premier has been working on for about a week now. They had a crisis cabinet meeting focusing only on domestic violence last Friday. On Monday, they came out with a $230 million package for emergency support for victims. That was the money. This is the legislation to be changed. What sparked this was the alleged murder of Molly Tyshurst. She. Was the Forbes mother who was allegedly killed by her ex partner just days after he was granted bail by a court registrar. Now, Sophie, I can tell you that details are still being worked out and they’ll be worked out over the weekend by the government. But the government is looking at making sure that only magistrates can make those important bail decisions and that high risk offenders could potentially be monitored. Our approach to this has been to look specifically at the legal system and the application of bail in NSW courts. You can expect legislative change to be introduced into the parliament next week. So the cabinet will look at those legislation changes on Monday. We’re expecting Tuesday or Wednesday to see the laws introduced here at State Parliament, Sophie, But we can expect a modest expansion of the electronic ankle monitoring bracelet system to be included in that package. Liz Daniels with the very latest from State Parliament, Thank you.
