NRL star Adam Elliott moves on from ‘toilet tryst', commits to fresh start with Canberra Raiders

Canberra Raiders recruit Adam Elliott has moved on from the highly publicised scandal that led to his axing from the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and says his off-field life is the “happiest it’s been”.

Elliott made headlines for all the wrong reasons towards the end of the 2021 season – he was asked to leave a Gold Coast restaurant after being discovered in a toilet stall with NRLW star Millie Boyle.

The 27-year-old was stood down by the Bulldogs over the so-called “toilet tryst”, which was the most recent entry into his unenviable rap sheet.

Elliott was eventually forced out of the Bulldogs after more than 12 years in the club’s system but was thrown a lifeline by the Raiders at the end of October.

Fronting the press in Canberra colours for the first time, Elliott said he’d put the “toilet tryst” behind him.

“I don’t really look back to be honest,” he told reporters on Thursday.

“Obviously, you do learn lessons and you carry them with you. I’ve learned some really valuable ones and important ones. For me, it’s all about looking forward and diving into everything here.”

Elliott said he had been enjoying the slower pace of life in the nation’s capital and was beginning to feel at home among the Canberra playing group.

“The boys have made me feel really welcome,” he said.

“I formed some really good relationships with the boys up on the Gold Coast because we were in the same hub up there.

“When everything happened and I knew I’d be looking for a new team, the Raiders were at the top of the list for me just because of the relationships I’d formed with the playing group.”

Now that his wish has come true, the hard-hitting forward is stopping at nothing to prove he’s a changed man off the field.

He’s gone as far as to study up on the Raiders’ history in his spare time, spending the best part of an hour revising for a written pop quiz – which he aced.

“I was winning the whole way and I ended up flunking out on the last question,” Elliott said with a smile.

“I like reading, they threw the (study materials) out and I reckon most of the boys just had a bit of a read over it. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that I was stuck into it for about an hour, trying to remember everything.

“They got me on a trick question, so I’ve got to cop the silver medal for now.”

Elliott said he was unsure where he’d slot into the Raiders’ 17 but one thing was certain.

“I definitely won’t be in the outside backs,” he joked.

“I’ll be in the forward pack. I might play a role coming off the bench where I fill a middle spot or an edge spot.

“You’ve sort of got to wait and see what the team and what the line-up looks like coming into round 1.

“I’ll just do whatever’s best for the team and I’m really looking forward to slotting into a great football side and winning some games.”

Elliott underwent alcohol counselling this year after an incident involving former Bulldogs teammate Michael Lichaa and his fiancee, but the Raiders opted not to enrol him in a similar program.

As he prepares for his first season with the Green Machine, Elliott says he has plenty to be grateful for – he and Boyle are now dating, and he’s feeling ready to repay the Raiders’ faith in him.

“I’m really proud to put the Raiders kit on,” he said.

“The fresh start has re-energised me.

“For now it’s just head down, bum up.

“My life off the field at the moment is the happiest I’ve been … It’s full steam ahead.”
