NPO Zappelin is going to portray songs and teach preschoolers sign language

NPO Zappelin, the channel on the public broadcaster for toddlers, will teach children sign language. The subject is addressed through dance lessons, so-called sign dancing, in the popular program Zin in Zappelin.

In sign dancing, songs are portrayed through dance, movement and emotion. The video clips of presenter Fenna Ramos and the well-known Zappelin characters also receive a sign interpreter. In this way, deaf and hard of hearing children can also follow the songs that are online.

Fancy Zappelin

“NPO Zappelin wants to connect deaf, hard of hearing and hearing children. And that is possible if you understand each other better; you can literally understand each other, in this case with sign language,” says Robert Fortuijn, network manager NPO Zapp/Zappelin. “In Zin in Zappelin children learn sign language in a playful way when they dance along with the video clips of Zin in Zappelin. While dancing, toddlers learn to indicate the day of the week with a gesture.”

Sign interpreter Irma Sluis

On Tuesday, NPO Zapp, for older children, announced that the popular sign interpreter Irma Sluis will make a television program for deaf and hard-of-hearing people together with radio DJ Igmar Felicia. In the Hands Up programme, six duos, consisting of teams of deaf and hard-of-hearing children and celebrities, carry out assignments in which they are only allowed to speak in sign language. In every team, one person can hear everything and the other can hear nothing or barely. The program, with which Sluis makes her debut as a presenter, will start on NPO Zapp on 13 November.
