Norwegian Food Safety Authority prevents illegal import of 34 dogs

In the period between November 2020 and April 2021, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority carried out a major operation against the illegal import of dogs to Norway. The operation ended with several police reports.

During the period, everyone who crossed the border crossing with a dog to Norway via Gardermoen, Svinesund, and Ørje was controlled, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority states.

“Norway is a lucrative market for dog smugglers. The prices of puppies are high, and the willingness to pay is great. When the demand for dogs also increased significantly during the corona pandemic, we saw it as important to increase control to prevent illegal import of dogs with serious diseases and lack of vaccines,” director of the regulations and control department Ole-Herman Tronerud in the Norwegian Food Safety Authority noted.

Of the 34 dogs, 33 came from EU countries and one from Russia.

“Lack of rabies vaccine, incorrect documents, and forged documents were the main recurring issues… Several of the cases have been reported to the police,” Tronerud said.
