Norway’s royal couple gives holiday tips: “Go hiking – and use the whole country”

Go hiking – and use the whole country. This is the Norwegian royal couple’s advice for domestic holidays in Norway this summer. The couple plans to travel the country with the royal ship Norway.

“Use the whole country. There are many great places,” King Harald said when NTB asked him to give advice to Norwegians who are planning a summer holiday in their own country.

“Go hiking,” the queen added. She famously loves hiking and has given her name to Dronningstien in Hardanger that many Norwegians plan to visit this summer.

“There are so many great places in Norway. I think many people became aware of this last year when most people had to holiday in their own country. And I think many have opened their eyes to many of the pearls we have in this country. We are exceptionally lucky,” the queen told NTB.

The royal couple was traveling the beautiful western fjords last week, with visits to Flåm, Hyllestad, and Florø. The trip was the first official trip after the corona pandemic hit Norway. The king is an avid salmon fisherman, so they also visited Lærdalselva to fish.

Vacation in Norway

The plans for the summer have not been completely finalized yet for the royal couple, but it will at least be a new trip with the royal ship.

“Ahaaaa, we also wonder about that,” the king replied when asked about summer holiday plans.

“No, we don’t know yet. It will at least be around the country,” the queen countered.

“It will be Norway, yes,” the king said. Both expressed that it was great to be able to travel through Norway again.

A visit to Ullensvang

The queen started this year’s summer with a small visit to Ullensvang Municipality in early June to open a new stair path called Kråkestien, which is located at the very beginning of Dronningstien.

“A visit 39 years ago left its mark. If we have counted correctly, I have probably been to Ullensvang at least 37 times – ever since my first visit in 1982,” the queen said.

“For me, Ullensvang is synonymous with outdoor life. There, nature is at its most generous. And nature has captivated me and my entourage more and more – as we have become known in the Ullensvang area,” the queen said in her speech during the opening of the path.

Went to Lofoten

Last summer, the royal couple, like many other Norwegians who were “trapped” in their own country, made the holiday trip to Lofoten.

“We started in Å at the far end of Moskenesøya and ended in Raftsundet in Trollfjorden with sun all the way,” Queen Sonja said.

There was time for more beach strolls and mountain hikes in the nature of Nordland. The royal couple had invited the Crown Prince’s family and Princess Märtha Louise and the children to a family holiday at the end of the summer.

The queen’s own Norwegian snapshots

The queen is also an avid hobby photographer and has previously shared a number of nature photos she has taken on her many travels in Norway.

“We have collected some of my private photos from my travels around Norway – especially from Northern Norway, the west coast, and Svalbard,” the queen said when she presented some of the photos to Chilean guests during a dinner in Santiago in 2019.

The photo collection shows that the queen has snapped photos in Utvær, by Vestfjord, by Dronningvarden on Stortind, and in Sørfjorden in Hardanger – and many other places.
