Australian Open 2024: Novak Djokovic storms into quarter-final after defeating Adrian Mannarino in straight sets

Record 10-time champion Novak Djokovic stormed into the quarter-final of the Australian Open 2024 after defeating France’s Adrian Mannarino on Sunday, 21 January. Playing in the morning session, Djokovic completed the fourth round match in ruthless efficiency, winning in straight sets. The top-seed player in the tournament won 6-0, 6-0, 6-3 against 20th seed Mannarino.

The win meant that Djokovic entered his 58th quarter-final round of a Grand Slam, equalling legendary Roger Federer’s record. Djokovic has appeared in the quarter-finals, 14 times in Australian Open, 17 times in Rolland Garros, 14 times in Wimbledon and 13 times in the US Open.

On the day, Djokovic put out a full repertoire of shots in his book and dominated Mannarino, who came off his third consecutive 5-set match. Mannarino struggled against Djokovic’s shotmaking and speed, but gave it a good fight in the third set of the match.

Djokovic spoke after the match and in the on-court interview said that he is feeling positive and playing strong tennis. The player had earlier been struggling due to health issues, but had said in the previous round that he was reaching his best level.

That was on show at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday, where with the roof closed on top of them, Djokovic dominated the proceedings. The top-seeded player hit 17 aces in the 3-set game against Mannarino’s one and converted 7 out of his 11 break points. The Serbian legend did not give Mannarino any space in the first two sets, but wobbled slightly in the third one. But at the end he sealed the game comfortably.

The defending champion will play either Taylor Fritz or previous year’s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-final of the tournament.
