A newlywed husband has sparked an internet debate this week after sharing that he was putting his wife on a ‘spending ban’ just months after their wedding.
The man took to the social media platform Reddit, revealing that since the pair were married earlier this year his wife has been on a “spending spree”.
Posting on Reddits ‘Am I The A–hole’ forum, the 25-year-old man wrote, “she’s been spending hundreds at a time on clothes, accessories, makeup and all others that fall within that ilk, little trinkets for interior design, just spending all of the time.”
He continued, “I make an okay living and the only reason we aren’t under water is because I don’t buy anything. After running up $550 on a coat, I finally decided enough was enough. I built a spreadsheet, explained it to her, and wanted to handle things like adults. She acted like she was nodding off, struggling to stay away, she looked like a high school kid stuck in the most boring class in the school.”
The post continued with the 25-year-old explaining that he did not expect for the situation to result in a fight as his reasoning was completely fair, however, his wife viewed things differently.
“She on the other hand, doesn’t view this as a budget that benefits us both, she views this as I’m dominating her and I’m constricting her.”
The post quickly garnered attention from Reddit users, with floods of people commenting in support of the man.
One user wrote, “Are you a teenager? If you’re married, you’re in a partnership. A partner doesn’t go out and spend all of the money of the partnership on nonessentials, especially if the other partner is funding things. It’s extremely selfish.”
Others warned him – writing, “people who cannot control spending generally do not change. you need to run away.”
The post was voted on by Reddit users with 97% of people voting in support of the newlywed husband.
