New York snow forecast: NYC braces for FIVE INCHES of snow in new Arctic blast - as speeding driver is filmed smashing into a snow plow while overtaking on icy upstate road

This is the terrifying moment a speeding car driver smashed into a snow plow on a snow covered rural road in New York, demonstrating just why officials are pleading with northeast residents to stay home until deadly Storm Indigo passes through.

The video, captured on the plow’s dashcam shows a black sedan attempting to overtake a truck on the opposite of the side of the road, as it attempts to get out of the way, swerving and crashing its side into the plow.

According to the New York Department of Transportation, nobody was hurt in the crash, which occurred in the North Country area of the state, close to the state’s Canadian border on Thursday.

On Friday, winter storm Indigo will move into the area while also lashing the Midwest and mid-South with snow, freezing rain and frigid temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued alerts, advising people to delay travel plans until the storm passes.

Speaking to the New York Post, Fox meteorologist Nikki Nolan said that the Big Apple could be hit with up to five inches of snow, just days after the city broke its infamous 700 day snow drought.

Snow was reported in Ohio and parts of Tennessee late Thursday. By Friday morning, flakes were expected in southern New England, New York and Washington DC, where two inches is expected.

The weather system earlier caused federal offices in the capital to close for the first time in two years due to weather.

Despite the relatively light amounts of snowfall, travel is still expected to be hazardous.

Philadelphia will be hit with between five to six inches of snow, reports the city’s CBS affiliate.  As of 7am Friday morning, the City of Brotherly Love is under a snow emergency warning which restricts travel and parking.

City schools are also closed as are the courts and libraries. Similar warnings are in place in New Jersey, with all state government offices closed.

Maryland reported similar levels of snow which was expected to impact the morning commute Friday by the afternoon, the temperature in the state will hit the teens before getting into the single digits over the weekend.

The warm-up will begin early next week with some temperatures expected to hit the 50s by midweek.

Storm Indigo ripped through the Pacific Northwest earlier  this week, ice accumulations were half an inch thick in Oregon and Washington state.

In Oregon, more than 80,000 homes and business lost power thanks to the storm.

On Thursday, the storm caused temperatures in Minnesota to plunge to -22.

Since this weather system began on January 12, at least 40 people have lost their lives with deaths being reported in Oregon, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee and New York.

A power line fell on a parked car in northeast Portland on Wednesday, killing three people and injuring a baby.

The three killed – two adults and one teenager – were found dead upon firefighters’ arrival, and the baby was taken to a hospital.

It is believed the victims were electrocuted after they got out of the vehicle, the statement said. The power company later deenergized the line, the statement added without specifying which company.

The NWS warned that freezing rain could return to parts of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington this evening into Friday morning and that the highest chances are within the western Columbia River Gorge and eastern Portland and Vancouver Metro Area.
