New York, New England Broil in High Heat and Humidity

High heat and humidity created sweltering conditions for much of New York and southern New England on Saturday, with another day of oppressive weather likely before cooler temperatures move in.

Several places in central New York were on track to possibly tie or break heat records, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a heat advisory for much of the region over the weekend.

In New York City, where temperatures reached 90 degrees Saturday amid sticky humidity, a 32-year-old man died while running the Brooklyn half marathon in the morning, police said.

The Fire Department treated several other competitors affected by the weather, including four in serious condition, the agency said.

Temperatures in Albany, N.Y. rose to 90 degrees by afternoon. The record high there for May 21 is 92 degrees, set in 1941, according to Frank Pereira, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Binghamton, N.Y., was hovering at 85 degrees, just below the record of 86 degrees set last year, Mr. Pereira said.

Boston was relatively cool on Saturday at around 79 degrees—but by Sunday, it could reach a sizzling 97, he said.

The National Weather Service heat advisory means meteorologists expect heat and humidity that make it feel above 95 degrees for at least two consecutive days, said Mr. Pereira.

“In weather like this, we urge people to take precautions, check on vulnerable family and friends and, as always, never leave children or pets unattended in cars,” he said.

By Monday, a cold front will sweep in and bring temperatures down to the more seasonal norm of mid- to high 70s, Mr. Pereira said.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, parts of the Denver area experienced a late season snowfall, with some places accumulating 15 inches by early Saturday, he said.
