The New York Giants have picked a one-time Bill Parcells protege to lead their quest to restore pride and winning to a franchise desperate for both.

Joe Schoen, the 42-year-old Buffalo Bills assistant general manager, was hired as the next general manager of the Giants, the team said.

He will replace Dave Gettleman, who retired from the position the day after the season after four losing seasons.

“We are pleased and proud to name Joe as our general manager,” Giants co-owner John Mara said in a statement. “Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff aligned with what we were looking for in a general manager.”

Schoen (pronounced Shane) has been serving as GM Brandon Beane’s right hand man in Buffalo. Talent evaluation has been key to the Bills’ resurgence, and Schoen is a big part of that, as he is considered one of the top candidates in this cycle.

“It is an honor to accept the position of general manager of the New York Giants,” Schoen said in a statement. “I want to thank [co-owners] John Mara and Steve Tisch, and their families, for this tremendous opportunity. And obviously, I am grateful to Brandon [Beane] and the Bills for the experience I have had in Buffalo. Now, the work begins.”

Schoen works closely in all facets: analytics, personnel, football operations and communications. That ability to build relationships across departments is especially attractive for the Giants, who are seeking a complete makeover of the football side of their operation.

“My immediate focus is to hire a head coach, with who I will work in lockstep with to create a collaborative environment for our football operations,” Schoen said. “We will cast a wide net, it can be former head coaches, first-time head coaches, but more importantly, it has to be a person who possesses the ability to lead an organization and the ability to motivate and develop players. On the personnel side, we will begin to evaluate our roster and prepare for the draft and free agency. Our goal is to build a roster that will be competitive, have depth, and most importantly, win football games.”

Schoen cut his teeth in Miami after being hired as a national scout by Parcells in 2008 when he was with the Dolphins.

“I was impressed with Joe because he was a sharp guy and he had a good thought process when it came to evaluating players,” Parcells said in an interview with The Athletic.

Schoen served as the Dolphins assistant director of college scouting before being promoted to director of player personnel (2014-17), where he worked for former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Schoen is set to embrace quite a challenge because of the mess created over the past five years, as the Giants are tied with the Jets for the worst record in the NFL since 2017.

“Joe is the kind of exceptional leader we sought to oversee our football operations,” Tisch said. “We will do whatever it takes to support Joe’s vision and strategic plan for success. We are excited to begin this next chapter with Joe as our general manager.”

None of the Giants’ GM candidates – including their three finalists – have ties to the organization, which is a significant departure from the norm with Big Blue. The last time the Giants handed the keys to their football operations over to an outsider was in 1979 when Hall of Famer George Young was hired.

The Giants finished 4-13 this past season, which contributed to Joe Judge’s dismissal as head coach, and the team was 19-46 in four years with Gettleman as GM, losing at least 10 games in all four seasons. This was the Giants’ eighth losing season in nine years, and they’re now seeking their fourth head coach since Tom Coughlin parted ways with the organization at the end of the 2015 campaign.

Behind the scenes, it’s believed that the new general manager will be able to run his own show with no mandates from Mara and Tisch in terms of how the job must be done. Essentially: the Giants’ Way is subject to change, and following five consecutive seasons with double-digit losses, not to mention their fifth head coach in the last eight years, finding a new voice with the power to enact a new plan is the only mandate.

“Steve and I were both impressed with all nine candidates,” Mara said. “We came away from this process feeling like all nine will be a general manager in this league at some point. We just felt like Joe was the right fit at the right time for us.”

Gettleman’s tenure was a rocky one with far too many swings and misses. His philosophy to win while rebuilding failed mightily. The Giants stuck with quarterback Eli Manning in 2018 and picked running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 pick. Barkley rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons, but injuries changed the course of his journey heading into an uncertain future beyond 2022.

Gettleman and former head coach Pat Shurmur selected Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft, promising they had found a franchise quarterback to succeed Manning so that the former could retire to Cape Cod having done so.

Jones’ 2021 season ended abruptly and prematurely because of a neck injury as he missed the final six games. The Giants will have to decide whether to pick up the fifth-year option of his rookie contract in May.

In 2018, Gettleman signed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a five-year extension worth up to $95 million and then traded him the next year to the Cleveland Browns in a multiplayer deal. Of the players who became Giants in that deal, Jabrill Peppers is a free agent, Dexter Lawrence has not emerged as the pass rushing force the Giants hoped, and Oshane Ximines was a healthy scratch for most of this past season.
