True crime fans will be delighted to know that they have a brand new documentary to sink their teeth into. To make things even better, the series is Irish.

Ireland’s Unidentified Bodies is a four-part series that looks at the countless unidentified remains that lie in mortuaries, forensic labs and graveyards across Ireland.

The series that kicks off on Virgin Media One tonight follows Gardaí and forensic scientists across multiple cases, as they try to solve the mystery of a body without a name.

Over the course of the four episodes, the show will examine how the latest forensic techniques from DNA profiling to Forensic Dentistry and Facial Reconstruction are all employed in an effort to identify these bodies.

RELATED: Sister of missing nanny Priscilla Clarke looking for answers 33 years on in new crime doc

In the first episode, the badly decomposed remains of a young woman washed up on Ballinamona Strand in Co Wexford in December 1995. All they had to go on was the braces on her lower teeth and car keys in her pocket, however, no car to match the keys was ever found.

Priscilla Clarke went missing while out horse-riding with her employer in Enniskerry in 1988. However, it wasn’t until 2007 that her sister Claire, discovered by chance that remains had been discovered not too far from where her sister went missing. She lobbied to have the woman’s remains exhumed for a DNA sample to be taken.

Over 25 years later, it is still unknown who Ballinamona woman is, but investigators believe that someone, somewhere must be looking for her.

Another case that will be examined in the first episode, is the remains of a man were found in 2006 under a tree. It’s believed that the body had been undiscovered for a year.

The Gardaí and forensic scientists spent eight years trying to identify him and only when a forensic dentist was brought onto the team, did they learn that he may have been German.
