Young people with disabilities experience corona as an extra disability, according to research by Youngworks, commissioned by the Association of Disabled Persons in the Netherlands (VGN), Elke(in) and youngPIT. For example, there are young people who keep their distance as if they felt doubly distant because they are blind. Young people with disabilities have seen their friendships thin and quarrels have arisen in residential groups. This is reported by VGN.
Other young people with disabilities said that concerns about easing corona measures led to misunderstanding in the area. Another young person mentioned a positive point: “Take lessons online was actually very chill for me. Class hours were cut in half. This allowed me to distribute my energy much better.”
Due to corona, young people with disabilities are better aware of what they need. For example, they need certainty and ‘a voice’, contact with friends, peers and fellow sufferers and clarity. They also need coaching and customization, thinking in possibilities and foresight are also mentioned as a need and do not want to go back to ‘normal’.
After the summer, VGN, policy makers, education and care parties will talk to young people with a disability. To lend a listening ear and to learn about what they need.
