New panel set up to approve medical schools
NEW DELHI: The Centre has formed a Medical Assessment and Regulatory Board (MARB) to deal with the applications for opening new medical colleges, increasing seats in existing medical colleges and even to increase the intake of students in a course or college.
A notification has been issued in this regard. It states that no medical college or medical institution can be established, or new courses be started unless it is granted permission by the MARB in writing, in response to an application submitted in this regard.
The central notification also mandates the MARB to carry out assessment and rating of all medical institutions and shall be vested with all such authority in discharging functions under the Act. “Provided, without prejudice to anything stated in these Regulations, the MARB may appoint one or more independent third party agencies or agencies to carry out the assessment and rating of medical institutions, and on its behalf,” the notification states.
It comes in a backdrop of a series of initiatives being undertaken by the Centre to improve medical education in the country.
