The 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to start with a match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday (March 22). Two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders, which last reached the playoffs in 2021 under Eoin Morgan’s leadership, will open their campaign on Saturday (March 23) against 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Their match against the Pat Cummins-led side is scheduled to take place at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Kolkata played under Nitish Rana’s leadership in 2023 and finished in 7th place in the points table. This year, the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise will be led by Shreyas Iyer. The right-handed batter missed the cash-rich league last year due to a back injury.
Ahead of the start of KKR’s campaign in IPL 2024, former skipper Nitish Rana has provided a big update about Iyer’s fitness and said that he hopes the 29-year-old remains fit to lead the side in all matches.
“Shreyas (Iyer) is back with the team and is quite fit. Of course, he had fitness issues in the past, and we cannot take anything for granted. I hope I do not have to take up this responsibility again, as we are hoping Shreyas leads in all the matches. Having said that, if a situation arises where I have to wear the captain’s band again, I am ready for it. I was made captain last year, and that was the biggest thing for me. Although we did not achieve everything we wanted, yet it was the greatest experience for me,” Rana was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
The 30-year-old scored 413 runs in 14 matches last year to finish as the second-leading run scorer for KKR in IPL 2023. And this time, the left-handed batter is looking to score 600 runs, which could also help him earn a place in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
“Everyone wants to play for the country, and many players will have it in the back of their minds, but we have to stay in the present. I too want to get selected for the World T20 squad, but at this moment I am thinking only about the IPL. I believe I can get 600 runs in this tournament, and I will be aiming for that,” Nitish said.
The 2024 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be played in the West Indies and the USA in June. A total of 20 teams will fight for the big prize.
