Regina’s On Cue Performance Hub is set to unveil the Winter Moon Festival, a three-night celebration of food, community, and performance that runs at three local venues over the next 10 days.

According to a media release, the arts festival will celebrate various phases of the winter moon with an eclectic mix of performances, including an experiential fashion show with art projections. The festival also offers live Broadway classics, jazz, contortion, video, spoken-word poetry, and Indigenous storytelling.

Each artist’s presentation responds to the theme of “Winter Under the Snow Moon.”

The festival commences Thursday (Jan. 26) with a crescent moon show at Local Market YQR, beginning with Indigenous storyteller Jesse Archibald Barber. Former Saskatchewan poet laureate Gerry Hill and All-Terrain Theatre are presenting “What A Little Moonlight Can Do,” followed by a jazz show featuring Carter Powley and his band.

The quarter-moon festivities take place on Monday (Jan. 30) at the Regina Public Library’s Film Theatre. The night includes storytelling and live narration of animated film with Skyler Anderson, Tyler Toppings, and Justine “Tini” Stillborn. There’s also a poetry/monologue performance from Sydney Taylor, a contortion show by Lion Girl Sarah Fiset, an Under the Winter Moon performance by spoken word poets, and a star photography/video show by Indigenous filmmaker Jeremy Davis.

The festival concludes on Feb. 4 with a full-moon event at the Saskatchewan Science Centre featuring a pre-show star lab and a starlight art installation by Hilary Cowan. There’s also a fashion show and landscape presentation by fashion designer Anastasia Pearce and Indigenous painter Harley Sinclair, plus a night sky presentation by astronomer Samantha Lawler, and a musical performance by Glenn Sutter.

The final night also includes outdoor fire dancing under the full moon from Tribal Vibes Wildfire Productions Inc., as well as a snow moon close-up visit and introduction to the Kalium Observatory hosted by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Regina Centre.

Performances begin each night at 8 p.m. and all shows are free of charge.

Pre-show dinners are available for purchase from Meld Neighbourhood Eatery (Local Market YQR), The Hampton Hub (RPL theatre), and Skye Cafe & Bistro (science centre). Orders must be made in advance .

Beverages and snacks are also to be available during the shows.

“With the Winter Moon Festival, On Cue Performance Hub hopes to create a sense of community in Regina based around the performing arts and its power to bring people together,” said a media release. “It will give a platform to artists who don’t always fit in to the narrow confines of traditional performing spaces, allowing them to express their unique talents to a wider audience. The event is also an homage to the chilly Prairie winters that bring with it a sense of wonder and awe, but also a need to uplift the spirit through art.”
