New Amsterdam boss hints at Max and Wilder romance - despite Helen's shock return

The latest episode of New Amsterdam ended with the possibility of a shocking reunion for medical director Max Goodwin (played by Ryan Eggold). Still sore from getting rejected by new surgeon Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank), his ex-fiancée Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) reappeared in a TV interview and could put his feelings to the test as the hit NBC reaches the conclusion of its final season.

New Amsterdam’s series finale is fast approaching, and Max will have to make one of the hardest decisions of his life in the last episodes.

The finale is set to air on January 17 next year, so he only has a short time to get over his lingering feelings for Helen after she left him at the altar.

Helen’s sudden return at the end of this week’s episode will put his resolve to the test, but showrunner David Schulner has hinted at a surprising outcome over the coming weeks.

“We knew we wanted to bring Helen Sharpe back to test Max’s resolve,” he explained.

“To test his feelings for Wilder. To test whether or not he’s truly healed.

“And we knew we wanted it to happen at the worst possible moment for him.”

Max and Helen’s reunion arrived just as Elizabeth changed her mind after rejecting his request for a date earlier in the season.

Although the new surgeon is now willing to take the plunge, Max could end up marrying Helen if she has returned to apologise and take him back.

“Will he run back to Sharpe? Will he double down on Wilder?” David teased to TV Line.

“There are so many unanswered questions he has for Sharpe. Yet, at the same time, there’s the promise of something new with Wilder.

“We’re going to put Max through the wringer so whatever decision he makes is hard-earned.”

With still a few episodes left of the final season, viewers shouldn’t expect Max to make his final choice just yet.

However, David’s cryptic previews for the rest of the season could lead to some surprising conclusions.

Given Helen is being reintroduced as a “test” for Max in the final season, her role in the remaining episodes could be seen as an obstacle for him to overcome, with Elizabeth waiting on the other side.

Realising he’s not over his ex despite her decision to cancel their wedding at the very last minute would also be a step backward for New Amsterdam’s closing season.

While fans have been rooting for Max and Helen’s romance since the beginning, many of them would be unhappy to see him crawling back to the person who left him at the altar.

Plus, as David puts it, Wilder is offering “something new”, and seeing Max make a positive change to his personal life could be the perfect way to cap off the medical tearjerker.

However, the showrunner also warned Max’s decision will change how Elizabeth feels about him.

If he admits he still has feelings for Helen but wants to begin a new relationship anyway, will Elizabeth be happy waiting for Max to grapple with his emotions before things can get serious?

As the clock slowly ticks down on the fifth and final season of New Amsterdam, millions of viewers will be praying Max makes the right call before it’s too late to turn back.

New Amsterdam season 5 continues Tuesday on NBC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
