Aontú only political party advocating for No-No vote on upcoming referendums on care and family

Aontú is the only political party advocating a No-No to the referendum proposals on care and family after Sinn Féin said it would seek Yes votes.

Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald said: “Despite considerable disappointment with how the Government has handled the upcoming proposals, Sinn Féin has decided to support a Yes.

“We recognise their limitations and commit that a Sinn Féin-led Government will build on these changes to actually deliver meaningful change.”

It came was Fianna Fáil launched its campaign for Yes in the upcoming referendums on March 8 to “modernise our Constitution” with “a wider concept of the family.”

But Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín, a former member of Sinn Féin, criticised the proposed inclusion of undefined amendments “with potentially huge consequences.”

Even if not, the alternative was a case of “empty meaningless virtue signalling” by Government, he said.

“We would have welcomed a common-sense update to reflect a modern Ireland. But these are exceptionally poorly written,” Mr Tóibín said.

“The language in these amendments is unclear and confused and seriously questions the government’s competency. No-one is sure what a ‘durable relationship’ is,” he said. quoting some of the proposed new language in our bedrock law.

“This is a huge problem. It will have unpredictable effects. We don’t know what it means in terms in terms of social welfare, taxation, succession, immigration, family law and beyond.”
