Nets lose to Hornets in ugly home opener after pro-Kyrie Irving protests

Asia's Tech News Daily

The Nets’ home opener was a wreck, from the testy pro-Kyrie Irving protests outside that forced Barclays Center to briefly close its doors, to getting their doors blown off in a 111-95 loss to the Hornets.

After leading by double-digits just before halftime and by nine in the third quarter, the Nets were outscored by 15 in the fourth to lose with former minority owner Jay-Z sitting right next to their bench.

“They’re a fast, athletic team that wants to push and play in transition,” head coach Steve Nash had warned of the Hornets. “They [try to go] to the rim on a lot of pick-and-rolls, so it is happening really fast, which makes your decision-making challenged. So today we got to be really solid and locked in, what would be great if we don’t turn the ball over because that is going to fuel their offense and help their defense.

“They are excellent in transition, they play a lot of random basketball in transition which is difficult to defend and scheme against. So taking care of the ball will be huge for us to try to limit as much as possible the easy opportunities they create in transition.”

Nash was right. Charrlotte’s Miles Bridges torched them for 32 points and nine rebounds.

Kevin Durant had a game-high 38 points for the Nets. James Harden was the only other Net in double-figures, despite being nowhere near his dominant self, with a quiet 15 points, eight assists and seven boards.

They say forewarned is forearmed, but all of Nash’s warnings couldn’t prevent yet another slow start.

The Nets dug themselves a 19-point first-quarter hole in their season-opening loss at Milwaukee and a 14-point deficit Friday at Philadelphia. They did it again Sunday, falling behind 9-2 right out of the gate.

While Bridges was at the stripe making it 16-10, Nash subbed in Bruce Brown and Paul Millsap for Harden and Joe Harris. It was Brown’s first non-garbage time action of the season, and he was on the floor for just 23 seconds before he drilled a 3-pointer.

Trailing 19-13, the Nets responded with a 13-2 run.

Millsap found LaMarcus Aldridge to knot it at 21-all, and hit a 3-pointer off a drive-and-kick from Durant to put the Nets ahead. Millsap’s free throws made it 26-21.

The Nets padded the cushion to double-digits when Durant hit a pull-up that made it 57-47 with a little more than 30 seconds left before intermission. Harden’s running dunk off a Harden feed had the Nets ahead 68-59 four minutes into the second half, but that’s when they started to lose their grip on the game.

Clinging to a 70-64 edge on Brown’s cutting layup off a Harden feed, the Nets allowed a 9-2 run. Bridges’ three-point play capped the Hornets spurt.

Ish Smith’s pull-up gave Charlotte a 79-78 lead after three quarters, and they never trailed in the fourth.

Harden’s driving bank shot got the Nets within 84-83, but they never got over the hump. And by the time Kelly Oubre sliced through the lane for a layup, it was 104-93 with 3:18 left and the game was all but over.

The Hornets just opened it up from there.
