Neighbours defend rant posted on windscreen of car parked on road

Neighbours on a street where a furious note was posted on a car windscreen over a parking row today leapt to the writer’s defence.

Fed up locals in a street where a mystery note slammed ‘lazy commuters’ for parking outside their house today defended the note – saying the road is impossible to park on.

Residents of Hunter Hill Road in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, say they often struggle to park outside their terraced homes because of commuters and parents picking their children up from a nearby school.

One homeowner has even been forced to buy a £30,000 garage to park his car.

Last week, a note posted on a car went viral after it slammed the motorist for being a bad driver and parking on the street to ‘commute into the city centre’.

The anonymous rant read: ‘I’m a selfish commuter who comes and parks badly on your street, taking up too much room because I can’t park.

‘I come each day and park here, then walk to work elsewhere probably because I’m too cheap to pay for parking or be sensible and more environmentally conscious and to take the bus.

‘I do this and park, taking up so much space that you can’t park here, and I don’t care because I’m a single commuter in a car and I don’t care that you now can’t park on your own road.’

The letter divided opinion on social media, as some defended the sentiment of note while others argued that the motorist should lodge a criminal damage complaint.

However, speaking today, residents said it is a common occurrence in the street as locals battle for a parking spot with commuters.

Oliver Guy-Smith, 40, who has lived on the street for over 20 years, said: ‘Around eight years ago, someone was leaving notes on people’s car but it stopped.

‘Then someone once posted loads of notes through people’s letterboxes because of the parking.

‘I think people have got the wrong end of the stick – they are complaining because they said the car was parked badly.’

Oliver also says he was forced to buy a £30,000 garage on a nearby street – so he could have his own parking spot.

He said: ‘I’ve lived here for 22 years and the parking has just got worse.

‘I even had to buy a £30,000 garage near my street so I have somewhere to park. There’s now some houses that have around three or four different cars.

‘I have my garage and I try to not drive as much, so it doesn’t really affect me.

‘When people come to my house to stay, I have to tell them to park before 7pm or they won’t be able to park on the street.’

One woman, who requested to remain anonymous, said that the street normally  becomes quieter after 5pm once the school run finishes.

She said: ‘I live on a different street but my daughter lives on this road and she can never get parked outside her house.

‘It normally does get quieter after the school run and after the teachers have gone home, because they normally park on the road.

‘They don’t have a car park, like some schools do, so everyone parks on the road.’
